The Nipple Measuring Tool can help you determine breast pump flange size. To get sizing, you want to measure only the nipple, not the areola, which is the darker area around the nipple. If your nipples are flat or inverted, try stimulating the nipple so it is more erect before measuring. This tool provides two ways to measure your nipple. On the long edge of the tool is a millimeter measurement ruler guide. The rest of the guide has cut-out circles to fit your nipple inside of for finding your measurement. to measure the diameter of your nipple. If you are measuring before delivery, please note that you may change in size. Measure after feeding the baby for the best results as nipples may swell if pumping with a flange that is too small causing an inaccurate measurement. This tool is flexible food grade silicone for comfort, but make sure not to bend when measuring. Optimal fit allows you a pain-free snug fit with freedom of nipple movement. You should go up and not down in size if there is a question. For example, if you are measuring 14mm, you will want to choose 15mm or 16mm depending on what is available for your breast pump brand.
Fitting the circles on your silicone measuring tool:
1. While standing in front of a mirror, center a circle close to your nipple diameter over your whole nipple.
2. Your entire nipple should fit completely inside the circle.
3. Be sure you can see your entire nipple inside the circle and right where it meets the darker areolar tissue.
4. The number in millimeters indicates your nipple diameter.
5. Don’t forget to measure each nipple individually since you may not get the same measurement on the left and right breast.
