This fitting guide from Spectra is one of the best I have found that pictures what you are looking for in your breast flange size. You can use this guide for almost every brand of breast pump with traditional flanges.
As you can see from the images, there needs to be room for the nipple to move, but not so much room that the areola is drawn into the tunnel. While you should measure your nipple before pumping, make sure to go up in size 3mm-5mm to achieve the best fit.
Please note that measuring your nipples does not guarantee fitment because each mom has different elasticity to factor, but it is the best place to start!
